Between waves, players place and upgrade towers along enemy paths, shaping the layout of a level to slow and damage incoming creatures before they reach a core objective the player must protect. Once a wave begins, players switch to direct combat, picking up weapons and gear to personally fight alongside their tower defenses, adding an action layer atop the strategic building phase. Multiple character classes offer different weapons, abilities, and playstyles, encouraging cooperative play where teammates can specialize in different roles during combat and defense. Enemy waves grow more challenging over time, introducing new creature types that require adapted tower layouts and combat tactics to survive. Levels are set on alien planets under siege, with environmental hazards and varied terrain influencing how mazes can be constructed. The combination of building phases and hands-on combat distinguishes the game from pure tower defense titles, rewarding both strategic planning and shooting skill in equal measure.
