Combat relies on motion-tracked weapon handling: players aim, reload and swing melee weapons like machetes using natural hand movement rather than automated actions. Ammunition and healing items are scarce and scattered through the environment, so players scavenge as they move between missions. The rebuilt combat system adds a detailed mutilation mechanic, letting shots and strikes tear into zombies with visible, location-based damage rather than a single hit-point bar.

The campaign is split into short, self-contained missions that can be played solo or with up to three other players in online cooperative mode. Moving through desert towns, canyons and abandoned buildings while searching for survivors. A separate horde mode strips away the story and puts the same group against escalating waves of zombies on fixed maps, rewarding coordinated positioning and ammo sharing over solo aggression.
