The Magister

Combat plays out through deck-built card battles, though hostile encounters can also be resolved peacefully through Tactical Diplomacy. That system uses its own conversation cards to wear down an opponent's Rage until it reaches zero, ending the fight without bloodshed. The mystery itself is randomly generated each time, so the clues, motives and the identity of the murderer change from playthrough to playthrough. Players choose from different Magisters, each with a distinct specialty and personal flaw, such as a cunning alcoholic or an intelligent insomniac. Companions such as a mercenary, spy or sage can be recruited to help investigate, and even local cats or dogs can fight alongside the player. The whole investigation unfolds across 14 days in the fantasy setting of Silverhurst, giving players a fixed window to gather clues and question suspects.
