Subject 13

The player controls Franklin Fargo, a professor of physics whose life has been marked by grief since his fiancee died in a holdup meant for him. An unseen voice in the facility refers to him only as Subject 13, giving no explanation for why he is there or what the facility once studied. Exploration plays out like a point-and-click adventure: 3D character models move across hand-drawn, partially animated backdrops as Fargo searches each room for a way out. Progress depends on combination and logic puzzles rather than combat or reflexes. Many of these are direct takes on familiar brain teasers such as Reversi, Minesweeper and sliding tile puzzles, reworked to fit the story. Other puzzles ask the player to combine key objects found in the environment, which sometimes calls for testing a few wrong pairings before the right one clicks. There is no map or objective list beyond what the room in front of the player demands, so the pace stays deliberate and investigative. As Fargo pushes further into the facility, the story fills in why he was taken and what Subject 13 actually means.
