Players take on the role of a magician who must defend a personal base from waves of monsters while simultaneously assembling forces to attack rival bases. Every card belongs to its own small tech tree. Playing lower-tier cards unlocks the stronger cards above them, so a deck grows in power as a match continues. Cards summon buildings, units and spells, and some summoned economy buildings generate new cards to draft during the same match. Before a match, players pick a primary and secondary devotion, such as Fay Caller or Occultism, and each devotion carries its own perk and a distinct set of themed cards. Combining two devotions changes which strategies are viable, since the perks and unlocked cards stack together for that run. The main competitive mode is a battle royale where players face off against up to 30 other magicians, each defending and attacking at once. Weaker bases are eliminated as the match narrows toward a winner. A separate single-player campaign spans more than 30 handcrafted scenarios that introduce the deck-building and base-defense systems at a steadier pace. A built-in scenario editor lets players design and share their own custom missions using the same tools the campaign was built with.
