Construction happens at the level of individual rooms and corridors rather than prefabricated buildings, so check-in halls, security lanes, gates, baggage systems, lounges and shops are laid out by hand and joined into a route that passengers can actually walk. The simulation follows individual travellers along that route, and a badly placed security checkpoint or an undersized corridor shows up immediately as a queue spreading backwards through the terminal. Outside, runways, taxiways and stands have to be arranged so aircraft can move without blocking one another, and runway length decides which contracts an airline will offer at all. Staff are hired and trained across ground crew, security, cleaning and administration, and every service the airport sells becomes a revenue line to weigh against wages and upkeep. Progress comes from taking on larger aircraft and longer contracts, which in turn forces the redesign of a terminal that was laid out for smaller traffic.
