Oil is the engine of everything. Rather than building a static refinery and defending it, you drive mobile oil platforms out to a field, plant them, and pump, which means the economy itself is something you move and can lose. Each side plays differently. Human forces field hi-tech hardware such as anaconda tanks and enforcers. The mutants bring low-tech living weapons including mastodons and giant scorpions. The Series 9 machines deploy seeders and weed killers built for spreading and consuming. Bases go up from a familiar set of structures. A machine shop turns out vehicles, barracks trains infantry, and a research lab opens better technology, so build order and timing decide how quickly you can answer a rush. Scattered across the maps are ancient technology bunkers holding pre-war hardware, and taking one can hand you a capability the other sides do not have yet.
