The core game still has players expanding across a hand-crafted or randomly generated galaxy, founding colonies, researching technology trees, and negotiating or fighting with a dozen distinct alien civilizations, but this expansion pushes the meta-game toward subterfuge as a viable path to victory. It rewards players who enjoy long-term strategic planning and want another lever to pull besides fleets and treaties, making empires feel more vulnerable and interconnected than in the base game alone.
