Exogate Initiative

Players lead an international research initiative, digging an underground facility by hand and adding new rooms and specialized equipment as the operation grows. Staff, known as Gaters, are recruited from varied backgrounds and need food, rest and emotional support alongside their work. They also form relationships with each other that carry through loss when a colleague dies. Teams are dispatched autonomously through the Exogates to explore alien worlds, gather samples and encounter other factions who can be resisted, defeated or negotiated with depending on the situation. Missions pause for decision points where a call has to be made quickly, sometimes with a Gater's life on the line. Selling samples and writing discovery reports brings in the funding that keeps the initiative running, while studying hostile alien life feeds new weapons and defenses back into the home base. New specialist roles, from scientists to soldiers, unlock as the operation expands, broadening what a team can attempt on its next expedition through the gate.
