El Dorado: The Golden City Builder

Building placement and road networks form the backbone of the settlement, with production chains and resource management determining how quickly the city can expand. Players deal with neighboring settlements through diplomacy or through direct raids, and raiding is also how the city gains laborers to work its fields and workshops as the population grows. Temples introduce the game's central and most distinctive system: a Priest selects a laborer for ritual sacrifice during festivals held in honor of a chosen god. And successful sacrifices grant benefits such as protection from disasters or higher yields from farms and fields. This ties the city's religious calendar directly to its labor pool, making population management a recurring strategic tension rather than a background resource. Success means balancing outward expansion and conquest against the upkeep the settlement needs to keep growing. All while maintaining enough favor with the gods to avoid the disasters that come with neglecting them. The result is a builder focused as much on managing people and belief systems as on laying out streets and buildings.
