Distant Worlds: Universe

The player manages colonization of new star systems, diplomacy with rival empires, trade between planets, and scientific research, while directing fleets in real-time combat against pirates and enemy forces. Much of the underlying economy, from mining to shipping, can be automated through AI-controlled governors and captains, letting the player focus on strategic decisions rather than micromanaging every ship and colony.

What sets it apart is scale: galaxies can contain hundreds of star systems populated by multiple playable species, each with distinct traits, alongside independent factions, pirates, and space monsters that all act simultaneously in a persistent, living galaxy rather than a turn-based one.

• Procedural Galaxy Generation Each campaign creates a new galaxy with hundreds of star systems to explore and settle.
• Automatable Economy AI governors can manage mining, shipping, and colony production on the player's behalf.
• Real-Time Fleet Combat Ship battles unfold continuously rather than in discrete turns.
• Multiple Playable Species Several distinct empires with unique traits and starting conditions are available to lead.
• Diplomacy and Trade Players negotiate treaties and set up trade routes with independent and rival factions.
